RSL: Signed as a Discovery player to the Senior Developmental roster on 3/09/06The sport of soccer has already taken 22-year-old Atiba Harris on a whirlwind journey across the Atlantic, but if Real Salt Lake has anything to say about it the ultra-talented forward will plant himself in Salt Lake City for quite some time. After signing the promising St. Kitts & Nevis international striker prior to the 2006 campaign, RSL saw hints of what Harris is capable of last year when he scored four goals in 22 games during what proved to be an up-and-down introduction to American soccer. Harris cooled down for during the middle of the season after scoring twice in his first six appearances across April and May, but a solid finish to the campaign has raised hopes for what Harris can bring to the table in what should be an interesting competition for minutes as part of RSL's deep corps of attacking options.
Possessing a towering physical presence, startling speed, and deft touch that are rarely seen in combination, it's no wonder the Caribbean talent was sought after at the age of 17 by English Premiership mainstay Newcastle United. While he played in Newcastle's youth system in 2002, difficultly in obtaining a British work visa led to Harris having to shop himself to other clubs around Europe - and there was no shortage of suitors. But while French Ligue 1 club Nice and other British teams including Portsmouth, Leeds United, Nottingham Forest, Cardiff City, Oldham Athletics and Huddersfield Town all had a look, Harris settled for the 2003-04 season at Spanish La Liga side Cαdiz, who loaned him to Second Division side CD Linares for part of his stay. Harris would return to St. Kitts & Nevis side Elco St. Peters for portions of the 2004 and 2005 seasons, but his break stateside came when Real brought him in for a trial following the inaugural 2005 campaign. An impressive showing then parlayed itself into a 2006 preseason invite, when he not only worked his way onto the squad, but into the starting line-up for RSL's season opener.
Coach Ellinger's Call
"Atiba is really a very unique player in this league. It's not too often that you see a player with his size and speed posses the kind of soccer skill he brings to the table. He had some great moments for us, and he provided a great compliment to Jeff (Cunningham) on several different occasions last season. Atiba is gifted athletically and I am excited to continue to monitor his progress. I believe with some more work and additional experience, Atiba will develop into a great player in this league for a long time."
