RSL: Signed to a Senior contract as a Senior International on 8/17/07
"Breakout season" does not even begin to describe the 2008 campaign of Javier Morales, as even that description sells short the importance of the midfielder that practically willed Real Salt Lake to its first-ever postseason appearance. The proverbial straw that stirs the RSL drink, the Argentine playmaker has re-written the RSL record books since his August 2007 arrival from South America, thanks in no small part to a 15-assist, six-goal 2008 campaign that, for better or worse, secured him an unofficial title most would shy away from - the most underrated player in Major League Soccer.
The workmanlike Morales went about his business without picking up accolades usually earned for such sparkling displays, those 15 helpers ranking second only to fellow countryman - and 2008 MLS MVP - Guillermo Barros Schelotto (Columbus Crew) and helping him smash RSL's single-season record in the category, while his six goals on the campaign ranked second on the squad behind only Yura Movsisyan. No longer under the radar, the only certainty regarding the affable midfield maestro - besides his ever-improving English skills displayed on the viral video hit "The Javi & Kyle Show" - will be his presence in an RSL jersey for years to come, as the club made sure to lock up the 29-year-old's services through the 2012 season via a four-year contract extension last September.
