They say one man's trash is another man's treasure
and that's not to say that Real Salt Lake defender Jack Stewart is rubbish by any means. However, he was certainly underappreciated during his first year-and-a-half with the Chicago Fire, where he saw only 540 minutes of action across 14 games. A Real Salt Lake squad that was in desperate need of quality defenders during the middle of the 2006 season went after Stewart, acquiring the former first round draft pick in a trade for midfielder Ryan Johnson.
RSL would certainly get the better of the deal, as Stewart proved he was first-team material when he started all 12 of his appearances with the Utah side during the second half of 2006. Meanwhile, Johnson played all of 46 minutes in the Windy City before bolting to Europe in the off-season, making the Stewart deal a gold rush for RSL. The Notre Dame product will begin 2007 on the right side of Real Salt Lake's four-man backline, and his familiarity with fellow defenders Willis Forko and Eddie Pope - with whom he started alongside in 11 of his dozen RSL appearances last season - should pay immediate dividends in improving the squad's defense.
